Berlin is a great place. I have been really noticing the friendliness of the people and I have really appreciated their willingness to work with me as I struggle to communicate. Examples include a woman behind a shop counter from whom I sought directions; -out from behind the counter she came and walked me 50 metres to my destination; another being a bloke in the street - seeing I was struggling to read a map, came over and volunteered most helpful advice. These experiences have been consistent. Most people have some English, (thank goodness!), and I have managed to crack the odd joke and get the occasional laugh! Maybe they are just being very polite!
Also -compared to Madrid and Carcasonne, in France, bicycles are everywhere. People from all walks of life use them and facilities exist on main roads to enable them to be accommodated with ease.
Yesterday I collected my directions to Copenhagen. Its a ride of around 530km. I'll be heading off from the Brandenburg Gate around 09:30 on Sunday -rain, hail or shine!
I've attached some photos of the book of detailed maps. (If you know how to get rid of the extra image included do let me know!) For the non-cycling tourist the booklet contains 34 flip maps, similar to the detailed 'No.1' shown in this posting, that I will use to find my way out of Berlin. This booklet sits in a watertight clear plastic envelope on top of my handlebar bag enabling constant reference as I ride along.
I've finally farewelled my flu and the pesky bronchitis that followed so that's an extra reason for me to look forward to this section of my tour.
